Flow is our birthright. It’s why we’re alive today.

My entry into Flow states was through extreme activities growing up. For a time my dad was wealthy and had a penchant for dopamine.

It was thought risk-takers in extreme sports are seekers of adrenaline rushes. But what we now know is that risk-taking and novelty-seeking are genetically associated with dopamine receptivity, not adrenaline.

It’s why in our house we called it the family gene. Some of us had it more than others. But how we were parented also seems to play a factor.

My earliest memories as a toddler are climbing out of my crib in the middle of the night to climb up kitchen cabinets. I learned to walk at 9 months and didn’t give my parents much time to rest.

By the time I was 7, I was either in the chase vehicle for my dad’s hot air balloon or riding high over the land with him. By age 9, I was zooming in his helicopter.

As a parent, I did what I could to instill safety in my kids, mostly because we didn’t have health insurance. But my youngest developed the itch to climb, and I couldn’t hold them back because I knew how exhilarating it is.

The novelty-seeking genetics may also be the drive behind migration. Who migrates and who doesn’t seems to be linked to the desire for novelty. Another reason I love travel.

When I was younger and didn’t have good outlets, novelty-seeking became an addiction to shopping and books which was eventually turned into a love of learning and exploring the wild, wild universe.

Fortunately, I’m not limited by physicality. I learned astral travel as a teen. Just this week I found myself traveling on a Bedouin pilgrimage through the most amazing land I’ve never seen before.

Are you a risk-taker or novelty-seeker? What is your entry into Flow for sheer joy of it?
