Caption: As I write this, a cacophony of noise-makers — the noon fireworks — are exploding all over Matagalpa as revelers take to the streets shouting their joy for the Virgin Mary. It’s La Purísima in Nicaragua, the celebration of her pure conception.
The joy of being a noise-maker, a silence breaker hit my body like a thunderclap this morning. I felt the overwhelming joy of connection with my sisters throughout the world during my morning stretches. It felt like a network of lights connected throughout the world. Lights that had been separate and alone in the dark, were finally linked together in a web of shared experience, #MeToo shining brightly all over the world.
Some of us were noise-makers all along, but separated by this powerful structure that gave us raised eyebrows and warned us not to shout too loud. But the time is now. We shout with anger, sadness, grief, enough is enough, and gratitude. Gratitude we are no longer alone in our shouting, we are loud and proud and I am filled with joy!
The revelers will move the streets going home to home shouting, “Quien causa tanta alegria?” (Who causes so much joy?) And in my heart I will answer, “We women of the world!” ????????❤️
